The Genre of this book falls under picture book, children’s literature, and mild historical fiction. Recommended grade levels from preschool to grade 3.
Thoughts – This book is perfectly suited for young readers. Virginia Lee Burton’s writing style is gentle and rhythmic, creating a soothing tone throughout the story. She successfully gives the house human like qualities and emotions, allowing readers to connect with it on a personal and deeper level. The story encourages reflection on themes such as home, identity, and the environment.
I first read this story as a child, but now, reading it again as an adult, I find that I connect with it in a much deeper way. It reminded me of my own neighborhood and the changes it has experienced over the years. Some of these changes were positive, like the addition of a park, while others were sad, such as the closing of favorite local restaurants. Just like in the book, we all experience the emotions that come with rapid change and sometimes long for the slower, simpler days when life felt less rushed.
Critique – This story follows a small house built many years ago in the countryside. As time passes, the house becomes surrounded by a growing city. The plot is simple, yet filled with emotion, as the house experiences the effects of time and change. The book does an excellent job illustrating the contrast between the peaceful quiet countryside and the busy, crowded city. It also encourages readers to think about how change can be difficult to adapt to, and to appreciate the small details that make a place feel cozy and special.
Discussion Questions –
How does the little house’s environment change throughout the story?
What makes a place feel special and comforting?
Why do you think the author gave the house human like emotions?
